being a jehovah witness, did you feel obliged to have a 4 door car?
once i bought a 2 door car, and everyone was looking at me as if i commited a crime.
i then reasoned with them saying, "didn't jesus send his deciples by groups of 2?".
I had just bought a new Ford T-Bird (2 door model, or course) back in 1992. I took it with me to an "upbuilding association" gathering. After, I showed the friends my new car. The first comment I heard was from a young pioneer MS who was eager beaver to become an elder.
He annouced in an obviously loud manner: "Not a very theocratic car!!"
(P.S. = He drove an old clunker and had to always ask others for a ride to the assemblies and field service. ~ SPONGE!!)

have any of you known or heard of elders snooping and rummaging thru yours or anyone else's personal belongings?
perhaps to find "evidence"?
well.....this just happened to me!
LOL @ Nathan!!!
Yeah! I got that Polish CD as a souvenier when I went to Poland this past August. And the idea of the "artificial sweetner" and "oregano", sounds like a winner! I'm not reluctant to do that and it sounds tempting, however, there would be one problem with that. Here in Japan, drugs like the ones common in the Western world, don't come by so frequently since the cultural society here is unlike many developed countries. So the dilemma is that the Japanese police might stumble upon them and freak out since they probably can't tell the real thing from a "prop" and I'll really have to do some explaining. (Or some time).

Mark (aka Haereticus),
That's okay! I really know what you meant. All in all, it's sad to die so prematurely in any senerio. The Society's System of Things almost got me into the pioneer ranks. I'm glad I held back. But I guess I didn't hold back far enough because I'm still "towing the line". (Soon however, they will look back and find my place empty!)

how big was your congregation?
we had 2 english and i italian cong, in the old hall.
the cong i attended had about 140 publishers.edited by - hamptonite21 on 14 november 2002 23:49:16.
My former congregation in America had about 85 publishers (including 8 elders /8 MS and 7 regular pioneers). Now that I recently moved to Japan and am "technically" serving where the need is great in an English speaking congregation, we have 50 publishers with only 3 elders/2MS ~ but 25+ regular pioneers.
Here is where I'll "submerge". So I guess that makes it one less MS.

i hated getting ready for the kingdom hall.
the whole thing about modest skirts and matching tops ws really difficult for me.
i totally was not into that at all.. i really felt such a fraud in my jw clothes and couldn't wait to get them off!.
I know what you mean. Now what do I do with all those suits and dress shirts/ties in my closet? Since I was a very zealous JW, I always had the "need" to wear my theocratic wardrobe just about everyday during the week. Now that I'm doing the fade, I just look at all these clothes and hope that perhaps one day I will become a company executive and I'll have to wear nothing but business attire. Anybody out there have a president or vice-president position open in their company? I got the keen duds!

As some of you might know from my first post (below), I am doing like a submarine and planning the "submerge".

Being I was zealous and kept up with appearances, they have been puzzled of my slowing-down.This, no doubt, had thrown up all "RED FLAGS". The elders had been occasionally coming by to talk about my "spiritual welfare". I guess they are trying to probe and find out why I'm neglecting my service to Jehovah. Anyhow, this past Tuesday they mentioned about the kind of music I listened to and highlighted the fact that "alternative music" can be a lure of Satan. What!? (I wondered how they tied all this together). They mentioned that they noticed my CD's in my car (which I share with my wife). These two elders were with my wife and another sister in the field service while using our car. I assumed that my wife and the other sister was doing a return visit when the elders, while waiting in the car, made their discovery. Mind you, these CD's are kept in the center console and isn't visible to anyone. Since there is only room for about 5 CD's, my wife and I kept only a "sober" mix. Here is what we had in the car.
(a) Kingdom Melodies, (b & c) Classical Music, (d) Polish Folk songs ~ from my recent trip to Poland during August. And yes, no one I know here in Japan can read Polish. Besides, this CD is traditional folk music. And (e) REM.
I guess by the sound of the topic that these elders tried to pinpoint that musical group REM (and alternative music in general) was possibly the cause of my weakness. Basically, that is for my own conscience to decide and I personally don't think that REM is the type of group that will promote child abuse, satanism or violence.....etc. I'm sure that those of you who are familiar with REM will agree with me.
My gripe is "why are they sifting thru our car"? Well, when they saw the expression on my face....they stumbled with words saying that "....ur....uh....um....they just popped the center console open...ah....ya' know". To me that is like doing a search without a warrant. I'm sure that all of you have good friends that wouldn't even attempt to do such a dastardly deed like this to you. I thought these elders are supposed to be trustworthy. I thought wrong! Yes, the WT Society says that the elders are shephards, put failed to emphasize that they are also trained to be like police K-9 dogs. Our conversation was then interuppted when my father-in-law knocked on the door. The elders immediately left. This now has confirmed my lack of trust with these elders.
Has this or anything similar happened to any of you? Did you pursue it any further? I could use advice.

I beg to differ on a certain point you made, Haereticus. (With all do respect, of course!)
[ "So in dire need of a safeguard against wordly habit of dying at an instance of a random accident - pioneer." ]
I received a message during July this year from a friend of mine who lives in Los Angeles, California USA.(My former "territory" and "stomping grounds" before my wife and I moved here to Japan) . Anyways, this friend of mine, who just so happens to be a pioneer, told me that a young brother "publisher" in the South Bay area of Los Angeles was shot and killed while in a car group while doing return visits. This was in the Carson area. He never mentioned any newspaper articles, however, his week-end pioneer partner was also in the same car. Police assumed that it was gang violence (rivalry) and this young brother was hit by a stray bullet. I believe my friend mentioned that this person was in his early 20's.
SAD!

Life applies to all of us!
James 4:14 & Ecclesiastes 9:11
May each of you today discover new and exciting things.
what were or are the qualifications for certain "responsibilities" around the hall?
our hall literally has only ms or elders --- attending, doing stage set up, handling book counter/service desk, and reading wt and closing the service meeting with song and prayer.... the only exception is the young son of a high ranking elder at our hall... they put the restrictions that a ms has to meet on these activities, i am regular, but not active enough in the service although i assured them i was "doing the best i could" (3 - 5 hours a month) but they acted like that was terrible.... we had a heated discussion for 30 minutes.... .
sd .
Kelpie touched on a "fact". Yes, some congregations use sisters if there aren't enough brothers to go around and "run the show". Of course, the WT Society would not let women have any part in "teaching". However, they have been used to help in other regards. For example, I've seen the women (sisters) run the magazine/literature counter. They also have assisted with the accounts. There were occasions where the sisters even read the paragraphs for the Book Study. But this is only in the worst cast senerio where there aren't enough men (brothers) to do everything all at once. I had been attending Kingdom Halls where there were only 3 elders and 2 ministerial servants. There were also Kingdom Halls where I had visited which had similiar circumstances. I found this especially true here in Japan. The ratio of men to women is staggaring. (Perhaps 1 male for every 20 females). When I was living in America, it was quite common to hear some of the brothers always insinuate that Japan is a prime picking ground for them to find nice young "spiritual" sisters to be their future wives. (Many of the JW women in Japan are in the pioneer work and are, by cultural aspects, very submissive and obedient).
Whoops! Sorry.....I'm running off on a different tangent than what you had originally asked.
